The ASL Bowl competition was established in 2011 by Dr. Petra Horn-Marsh as a platform for middle and high school students to showcase their storytelling skills using American Sign Language (ASL). The competition features three categories: ASL Storytelling, ASL Handshape Stories, and ASL Poetry, allowing students to choose the category that best suits their strengths. In 2012, the ASL Bowl became part of the GPSD Academic Bowl Biathlon, forming the GPSD Triathlon.
The most recent ASL Bowl took place on March 25, 2025, at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, where middle and high school students from the MSD ASL Bowl teams participated. Each student worked with their coaches to develop and practice their stories leading up to the competition. The outcome was highly successful, with each student bringing home a medal in one of the three categories.
This event not only provides a platform for students to express themselves through ASL but also fosters their creativity and storytelling abilities. The competition serves as an important opportunity for students to showcase their talent and dedication in ASL communication.
