Message from Superintendent

From the Office of the Superintendent

The 2018-2019 school year ended on May 24 and all the students arrived home safely.  The employees returned to  campus  the  following  week  for  three  days  of  professional  development  and  began  preparation  for  the Extended School Year (ESY) program.  ESY started on Monday, June 3, and will continue until June 28.  MSD is pleased to announce that ESY’s student numbers have increased.  During the summer of 2018, MSD had 23 students for ESY and this year has 36 students.  We are thrilled to have so many students return for ESY.

MSD is also proud to announce that the school’s Annual Performance Review (APR) done by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has increased by almost 100% within the past two years.  For the 2016 school year, the APR was 33.3%, very low and definitely in need for improvement.  In 2017, the APR increased to 50.7% and in 2018, it reached 60.3%.  MSD is very pleased with the increase and will continue to work hard to improve the percentage each year.

There are several capital improvements happening on campus during the summer.  The first is the replacement of carpet in Stark, the elementary school.  The work began right after school was dismissed for the summer and will  be  done  by  the  end  of  June.   Wheeler  Hall,  the  middle  and  high  school,  is  being  repainted.    All  the classrooms, restrooms, and hallways will have a new look for the start of school.   Additionally, new lockers have  been  purchased  for  Wheeler Hall.  The  window  replacement  in  Wheeler  Hall  has  not  begun  and  the security system for the campus is in its second phase.  Tuck pointing to the grout/mortar has been completed for all the buildings on campus.  The grounds on campus are beautiful.  Many thanks to the Grounds Crew from the Powerhouse for all the new plants and mulch.

As many of you know, there have been a lot of shared concerns about the conveyance of Rice Hall and the Boy Scout Cabin this past year.  As of today, there is no definite decision on the conveyance of the property and it appears that more legislative discussions will take place.
