Missouri School for the Deaf middle school and high school students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to St. Louis to participate in the Deaf Youth Art Day, organized by Deaf Inc., a day that would ignite their creative spark and leave a lasting impression. The students were divided into three distinct groups, each with its own unique focus. One group delved into the world of photography, learning the art of photo composition using their phones or iPads, and discovering the magic of capturing life's precious moments. They experimented with different angles, lighting, and editing techniques to capture stunning images. Another group immersed themselves in the vibrant culture of Mexico, learning about the significance of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and creating their own intricate sugar skulls inspired by the paper collages using artworks and designs from Mexico. They discovered the symbolism behind the colorful decorations, the importance of honoring loved ones, and the rich history behind this festive celebration. The last group channeled their creativity into designing mesmerizing Zentangle artwork using an outlined 'I Love You' hand sign, exploring the therapeutic benefits of art, the importance of self-expression, and the beauty of creating something unique. They experimented with different patterns, shapes, and lines, and discovered how to use Zentangle to express their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Throughout the day, students had the incredible opportunity to interact with successful Deaf artists, learning from their experiences, and sharing their own stories. They asked questions, sought advice, and gained valuable insights into the world of art and design. It was a truly wonderful day, filled with creativity, inspiration, new friendships, and pizza. The students left with big smiles, feeling empowered and motivated to continue exploring their artistic sides, and already looking forward to next year's Deaf Youth Art Day.
