Our talented Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) recently led an engaging and interactive language hour with our curious elementary students to support a weekly unit from Foundations for Literacy, a research-based reading curriculum specifically designed for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. This curriculum is renowned for its effectiveness in promoting literacy skills in this student population. The SLPs introduced the captivating book “The Napping House” before the students watched the story signed by a Deaf adult, which provided a rich model of American Sign Language (ASL) storytelling. Next, they watched the story signed by a Deaf child their age, which helped to foster a sense of connection and community. The students were then encouraged to answer questions about the story, demonstrating their comprehension skills and critical thinking abilities. Following this, they had the opportunity to design and describe their own house, allowing them to tap into their creativity and imagination. Finally, it was their turn to tell the story in the correct order, using the skills they had learned during the language hour to sequence events and retell the narrative in their own words. This activity not only promoted language development but also helped to build confidence and self-expression in our students.
