Groundhogs Day Celebration

Article on the Groundhogs Day celebration at Stark School with a group photo and photos of different activities.

Stark Elementary celebrated Groundhog Day with an engaging ASL Story Time, led by the talented Teacher Aide, Angela Swinton, who brought the story to life with her expressive hand gestures and infectious enthusiasm. She presented the captivating 'Groundhog Day' by Betsy Lewin, sparking students' interest in Phil's weather predictions and encouraging them to think critically about the science behind his forecasts.

Then our students took an active role in forecasting the future by conducting a peer poll on Phil's shadowy prognosis, carefully considering the data and making educated guesses about whether the furry forecaster would see his shadow or not. They collected data, graphed the results, and witnessed Phil's verdict, which, as we all know, was a resounding SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER! But that didn't dampen their spirits! Instead, they channeled their energy into crafting their own groundhogs from paper cutouts and brown lunch bags, demonstrating that even in winter, possibilities are endless and creativity knows no bounds.

In Stark's Specials class, students focused on dispelling shadows with flashlights and magnetic magic. They played a game of 'avoiding the dark' and designed structures that would impress even the most seasoned engineer, showcasing their problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.

To top it off, our young meteorologists created their own chocolate treats using pudding cups, sprinkles, Nutter Butters, and marshmallows - no forecasting skills required, just a sweet tooth and a sense of adventure! It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and excitement, and we're so proud of our students for embracing the spirit of Groundhog Day with such enthusiasm and creativity!
